John Bressan is a board-certified Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and is currently working in Urgent Care. He has been practicing as a nurse practitioner for over 22 years. He has worked as a Trauma NP and Emergency Room provider in a community hospital in northern California. He functions as a provider, diagnosing and treating complex and critically ill patients. He obtained his master’s degree from the University of California, San Francisco. He is a full-time faculty member at the University of the Pacific School of Health Sciences, Nursing program. His main area of focus is medical/surgical nursing, and high-fidelity simulation in prelicensure nursing program.

John is an advocate for patients with substance use disorders, specifically opioid use disorder. He published an article in April 2023 in the Journal of the Association of Nurse Practitioners titled: “Helping Patients with Substance Use Disorder: The Nurse Practitioner Role in Accessing Treatment.” He has presented at multiple state and national conferences about the utilization of medication-assisted treatment in the emergency department. His doctoral work focused on the stigmatization of this vulnerable population along with development of a Stigma Reduction Training Program and intends to submit it for publication as a follow-up to his prior manuscript. He is also co-author of “High Fidelity Simulation in Prelicensure Nursing Program”.

He remains passionate about treatment for opioid withdrawal in the Emergency Department. He saw firsthand the devastation caused by opioid use and the impact medication-assisted treatment (MAT) can have on an individual’s life. From that experience, he became committed to providing MAT to anyone seeking help. He provides MAT induction in the emergency department and provides outpatient prescriptions for buprenorphine.

His interests outside of his clinical acumen include traveling abroad, backpacking, and trail running. Now that his doctoral studies are complete, he is eager to hit the trails and train for his next 50k or 50-mile endurance run.
